Armada
End-to-end encrypted community chat on Nostr, with text, voice and invites and no chat server to run.
by Soapbox
Overview
Armada is a chat app for communities, in the style of Discord. You make a community, add channels, and invite people. Messages are encrypted between members, and they travel over public Nostr relays, so no company sits in the middle and there is no chat server to run.
Your moose box only hands out the Armada web page. Your messages and your keys do not live on the box.
Features
- Communities with text channels, threads, replies and reactions
- Live voice rooms
- Invite links for people to join a community
- Direct messages between two people
- Sign in with a Nostr key, a browser extension, or a remote signer
Setting up
There is no account on your box. Open Armada and sign in with a Nostr key, or make a new one. Your key stays in your browser, so keep a backup of it. Nobody can reset it for you.
Good to know
Armada uses public services that your box does not run. Messages go through
the Nostr relays Armada is set up with, such as relay.ditto.pub. Voice
rooms use a token service at armada.buzz. GIF search and push alerts also
use public services. Your browser calls all of them directly.
Your box cannot host the relay for a server-style group (a NIP-29 group). Armada does not include one, so use a relay that someone else runs.
Your messages and keys are stored in your browser, not on your box. A new browser or device has to sign in with your key again.
