Terms of Service
Last updated on October 10, 2026.
These Terms of Service are the agreement between you and us for your use of moose. Please read them. They include our Acceptable Use Policy, which sets out what a box may and may not be used for. How we handle your personal data is described in our Privacy Policy.
Who we are
moose is run by Andrei Onel, an individual based in Ireland ("we", "us"). You can reach us at support@mooseos.com. "You" means the person who holds the moose account, or the organisation they act for.
The service
moose gives you a box: a private virtual server of your own, in a data centre in the European Union, running the moose system software, with an address like name-word.onmoose.io. From your box you can install open-source apps, choose who can reach each of them, and keep your data. You manage your account, your box and your billing from your account at mooseos.com.
The service is what is described on our website when you create your box. We improve it over time and may change how it works, as long as the change is reasonable and does not take away what you are paying for. We keep the moose system software on your box up to date, which can briefly interrupt it.
Your account
- You must be at least 18 years old to create an account.
- If you create an account for an organisation, you confirm that you are allowed to agree to these Terms for it.
- Give us accurate details and keep your email address current: it is how you sign in and how we reach you.
- Keep your sign-in methods to yourself and tell us straight away if you think someone else has used your account. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
- You may not transfer your account to someone else without our agreement.
Your box and your data
Everything you store on your box is yours, and so is responsibility for it. We claim no rights over it. You give us permission to store, copy, back up and transmit your data only as far as we need to run your box for you.
We do not look at what is on your box. We only access it to run or repair it, to restore it at your request, to investigate a report under the Acceptable Use Policy, or when the law requires us to.
Your box's address is ours, and you may use it for as long as your box exists. After a box is deleted, we keep its address for you for as long as we keep its last backup, so a restored box comes back at the same address. After that, the address may be given to someone else. Your box also has a public IP address from our infrastructure provider. It may have been used by someone else before, we do not check it against blocklists, and it can change.
Apps
The apps you can install on your box are open-source software written and maintained by independent developers, not by us. We package them to run on moose, but we do not own them, and each one comes under its own licence. You are responsible for following the licence of every app you install. An app being available on moose does not mean its developer endorses or works with us.
Apps are provided as they are. We do not promise that an app is suitable, secure or free of faults, and we are not responsible for what an app does with your data. We may stop offering an app, for example if its developers stop maintaining it. We will try to tell you first. An app you have already installed will usually keep running, but it may stop receiving updates.
Payment and billing
- Each box is a monthly subscription at the price for its size shown on our pricing page. You pay before your box is created.
- Payments are handled by our payment processor, Stripe, and their terms apply to the payment itself. We never see your card details.
- Your subscription renews every month until you cancel it. You can cancel at any time from your account. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the month you have paid for: your box runs until then and is then deleted, and its last backup is kept as described under Backups. Apart from the refund in your first 30 days, we do not refund part of a month.
- If you change your box's size, the price changes from that moment, and the difference for the rest of the month is worked out automatically.
- If we take your payment but cannot create your box, we refund you in full.
- We may change our prices. We will email you at least 30 days before a new price applies to you, and you can cancel before it does.
Refunds in your first 30 days
If you cancel within 30 days of creating your box, we refund what you paid for it in full, without asking why. Email support@mooseos.com to ask for the refund. We refund the full amount to the payment method you used within 14 days of receiving your request, and then delete your box.
The 30-day refund is there so you can try moose. If you repeatedly create boxes and cancel them for a refund, we may refuse further refunds, except where the law requires one, and we may decline to create new boxes for your account.
If a payment fails
If a payment fails, your box keeps running for 14 days while we try again, and we email you before anything happens. If it still has not been paid after 14 days, we delete your box. Its last backup is kept for 30 more days, and if you come back and pay within that time, we can restore your box from it, at the same address.
Backups
We take a backup of your box every day and keep the most recent one. If something goes wrong, email us and we will restore your box from it. When a box is deleted, for any reason, we keep its last backup for 30 days and then delete it for good. Within those 30 days, if you have a paid box again, we can restore the deleted one onto it. We do this carefully, but we cannot guarantee that a backup will always exist or be complete, and a restore brings your box back to the day of the backup, not the moment before the problem. Keep your own copy of anything you could not bear to lose.
Availability
We work to keep your box running and reachable, but we do not guarantee any particular uptime. Maintenance, faults, and problems at our infrastructure provider or elsewhere on the internet can interrupt the service. We will tell you in advance about planned work that will take your box offline for more than a short time.
Suspension and termination
You can end the service at any time by cancelling your subscription, which deletes your box at the end of the month you have paid for, or by deleting your box yourself, which deletes it straight away. Either way the box and the data on it are gone, apart from its last backup, which is kept for 30 days (see Backups). Take anything you want to keep first.
We may restrict your box under the Acceptable Use Policy. We may end the service straight away if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms or the Acceptable Use Policy, or if we must by law. Otherwise we may end it only by giving you at least 90 days' notice. When the service ends, we give you the chance to take your data with you, except where the Acceptable Use Policy or the law prevents it.
If moose shuts down
If we decide to stop offering moose, we will email you at least 90 days before the service ends, and during that time you will be able to take your data with you. We stop charging you from the date the service ends.
Liability
Nothing in these Terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit. If you are a consumer, nothing in these Terms takes away the rights the law gives you.
Otherwise, we are responsible only for loss that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these Terms or of our negligence. We are not responsible for loss caused by apps, by your own actions or the actions of people you let use your box, or by events beyond our reasonable control. If you use moose for a business, we are not responsible for lost profits, revenue, business opportunity or data. Our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the event that caused the loss.
You are responsible to us for loss we suffer because you, or someone you let use your box, broke these Terms or the Acceptable Use Policy, including claims made against us by others and reasonable legal costs.
Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms. We will email you at least 30 days before a change that matters takes effect and update the date at the top of this page. If you do not accept a change, you can cancel before it takes effect. If you keep using moose after that, you accept the updated Terms.
Transfer
We may transfer this agreement to a company that takes over running moose, including one we set up for that purpose. Your rights under these Terms are not affected. You may not transfer this agreement without our agreement.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the law of Ireland, and the courts of Ireland can hear any dispute about them. If you are a consumer living elsewhere in the European Union, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country and may bring a claim in its courts.
General
These Terms, the Acceptable Use Policy and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about moose. If a court finds part of them invalid, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later. We send notices to the email address on your account.
