Overview

Hister saves the full text of the web pages you visit, so you can search for something you read weeks ago without remembering where. A browser extension sends each page to this app as you browse. Everything stays on your box.

Features

  • Full-text search over every page you have visited, with previews
  • A browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that adds pages as you browse
  • Keep your own pages private with rules for sites to skip or to favour
  • Index local files and folders, and PDFs you open in the browser
  • A command line tool, and an MCP server so an AI client can search your history
  • Optional meaning-based search, if you bring an embeddings service

Setting up

This app makes a long access token for you. Open the app page in the store and copy it. You need it in three places:

  • The web page shows a sign-in box the first time you open Hister. It says "password", but it wants the access token.
  • Paste it into the browser extension settings, with this app's address.
  • Paste it into the command line tool or an MCP client, if you use them.

Good to know

The crawler fetches plain pages over HTTP. It does not run a browser, so pages that need JavaScript to show their text are better added through the browser extension, which sends the page as you see it.

Meaning-based search is off until you turn it on. It needs an embeddings service that you pay for or run yourself, and it sends the text of your pages to that service.
