LibreChat

Overview

LibreChat is a chat interface for AI models that looks and works like ChatGPT, but runs on your own box. You can switch between Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and any OpenAI-compatible provider in the same conversation. Each person gets their own account, and every conversation is stored on your box.

Setting up

The first account you register after install becomes the administrator.

At install you can pick an AI provider. Its key is then used by everyone on this LibreChat. You can also skip it: each person can then enter their own key inside LibreChat, from the model menu.

When everyone has an account, you can turn off Allow new sign-ups in this app's settings.

Good to know

• You pay your AI provider directly. LibreChat only sends your messages to the provider you choose. Pointing it at an AI server on your own network costs nothing.
• Chat with files needs an embedding provider. Files are indexed with OpenAI's embedding models, or with any OpenAI-compatible server you name. Set it under File search in this app's settings. Without it, file uploads for search fail, and normal chat still works.
• The separate admin panel is not included. It needs a web address of its own, which apps do not get. Settings that only live in LibreChat's config file cannot be changed from a screen. Chat, accounts and LibreChat's own admin settings all work.
• Email is optional. Without outgoing email set up, password reset by email is off.
• This is a multi-service app. It runs LibreChat with its own MongoDB, a search engine, a vector database and a file indexer.
