Overview

OpenSEO is an SEO tool in the style of Semrush or Ahrefs, without the monthly plan. It gets its search data from DataForSEO through your own account, so you pay only for the lookups you actually run. The app, your projects and your saved results live on your box.

Setting up

There is no account to create. Open the app and you are signed in.

Add your DataForSEO key in this app's settings on the box. It is the long "Base64" credential DataForSEO emails you from its API Access page, not the password on its own. Until you add it, the app opens but shows no SEO data.

Good to know

  • The app has no login of its own. On a hosted box the box login in front of it keeps it private, so do not make it public from its page. On a home box, anyone on your home network can open it and use your DataForSEO balance.
  • Rank checks do not run on a schedule. Start them from the Rank Tracking page when you want fresh positions.
  • Search Console and Google Analytics need a secure address. Google only accepts the connection from an https address, so they cannot connect on a home box reached at a plain .local address.
  • Each start takes a few minutes. The app builds itself when its container is created, so the first start, and the first start after an update or a settings change, takes two to three minutes before it opens. The box stops waiting after two minutes and shows the app as failed. The build keeps going, so wait a minute more and press Start. A plain restart reuses the build and is quick.
  • You pay DataForSEO for data. Each keyword search or backlink report costs a few cents from your prepaid balance. Brand checks that ask an AI model cost about a dollar each.
