OpenMuse
A personal AI agent with its own web browser that works through tasks for you and shows every step.
by CopilotKit
Overview
OpenMuse is a personal assistant that does work, not just chat. Ask it for an outcome, such as researching a topic or filling in a form, and it makes a plan, uses its own web browser, and keeps going in the background. You can follow each step, approve actions before they happen, and take over the browser yourself at any time. It is made by the CopilotKit team.
Features
- A chat where the agent shows its work: plans, browser pages, emails, PDFs, and results appear inline
- Its own Chromium browser with saved sessions; "Take control" opens the same browser for you
- Tasks that keep running in the background, with pause, resume, retry, and an approval step before anything is sent or changed
- PDF forms: take an attachment, fill in the fields, and review the result
- Goals and tracking: watch public pages for changes, stock, or a price below a limit, and get an alert
- Gmail and Google Calendar: search and read mail, draft replies, and create or change events, each after your review
- A spending summary from a bank CSV export
Setting up
Before you install, you need two keys, which you enter in the install form:
- An API key from an AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google), plus the
model to use, written as
provider/model, for exampleanthropic/claude-sonnet-5 - A CopilotKit Intelligence key. Sign up at copilotkit.ai, create a project, and copy its server key
After install, open the app. OpenMuse asks for its own access key: copy it from this app's page in moose, under its secrets, and paste it in.
Gmail and Calendar are optional. They need a Google OAuth web app of your
own, with the Gmail and Calendar APIs turned on. Add its client ID and
secret in this app's settings, and add your app address followed by
/api/google/callback as the redirect URI in Google.
Good to know
- Your chat history is kept by CopilotKit, not on your box. On CopilotKit's free plan each conversation is deleted after 3 days, and only 200 are kept. Tasks, files, and settings stay on your box.
- Every answer uses your AI provider. The provider bills you for each message and each step the agent takes.
- The Linux terminal is off. Upstream's agent can run commands in a private Linux container, but that needs a Docker engine the app cannot have on moose. Browsing, tasks, files, and PDFs all work.
- Gmail and Calendar need the internet address of your box. Google
only accepts secure web addresses, so connecting them works on a hosted
box but not on a home box reached by its
.localname. - This is an early release. Upstream marks OpenMuse as alpha, and it changes quickly.
